The Second Seat

For consultants, speakers and founders of one.

The seat beside you has been empty since the day you started. I sit in it, build what you have not got to yet, and hand it back.

No. 01 · The question

"So · what do you do?"

You have an answer and you can hear yourself over-explaining it. Twenty years of judgement, and the sentence that carries it does not exist yet.

Kurt had the same trouble. He had built something worth paying for and he was describing it as marketing, because marketing was the nearest word to hand.

I give you the sentence, and the business underneath it that makes the sentence true.

No. 02 · The weight

You are the product, and everything behind it.

You price on instinct. You take the work that arrives. The whole operation sits in your head between calls, and the calendar decides what happens next.

That holds until the month you get busy, and then the selling stops while you deliver, and the pipeline you spent six weeks building goes quiet behind you.

The title you left had a structure around it. This one does not have one yet.

No. 03 · The posture

The strategic head, pulled up to your table.

Twenty years inside founder-led businesses, from the gym floor to Head of People & Culture. I have built the standards, hired the teams and run the numbers.

I have also done what you are doing now. Vital Culture went from nothing to a full book of founder-led clients, and I built the position, the offer and the pipeline for it myself before I built them for anyone else.

I hear what you have stopped noticing about your own operation. Built with you · and built to leave.

No. 04 · The Four

Four things decide whether you have a business or a very busy job.

IPosition
What you are known for, narrow enough that someone recommends you in one sentence without checking with you first.
IIOffer
A named thing with a scope, a finish and a number, that you can send to someone without writing it fresh each time.
IIIPipeline
Where the next ten conversations come from, and the follow-up that turns a room you were in into work you were paid for.
IVSpine
Rate card, contract, insurance, invoicing, and the capacity ceiling you will hit before you notice it.
No. 05 · Case study

Intent Group · Kurt Gillam.

Kurt rang me to ask whether I could recommend a marketing agency.

We had a conversation first. An agency would have sold him a campaign, and the campaign was the smallest piece of what he was building. His event had to be designed. The room had to be filled with people worth filling it with, and the commercial return sat in the four weeks after everyone went home.

I built the position, ran the event end to end, and built the follow-up that turned attendance into pipeline. He has a repeatable commercial asset and a second one scheduled.

He rang for a referral and got an operator.

No. 06 · The commercial read

One person, one ceiling.

Your business reaches as far as your own hours, and every hour spent building the back of it is an hour you did not bill. You have been making that trade quietly since you started.

I take the build off you and hand it back finished, once, for a fee you will earn back in four billable days.

No. 07 · The engagement

The Second Seat · one day, then three weeks.

We start with the day. I hear what you have stopped noticing, and Position, Offer, Pipeline and Spine go onto the table. Then I build them.

What you keep:
1

Your position, written as one sentence, with the proof that backs it

2

One named offer, scoped and priced, as a page you can send the same day someone asks

3

Rate card, contract and the terms you stop negotiating from scratch

4

The pipeline plan: who to call, in what order, and what you send afterwards

5

Your week, built so selling does not stop the month you get busy

If the day tells me there is not a business here worth building yet, I will say so, and we stop there.

No. 08 · Where to start · two doors
Start a Conversation

Twenty minutes. You tell me what you are building and where it keeps stalling, and by the end you will know whether this is right for you. Most engagements begin here.

The Second Seat

One day together, then three weeks of build, and you leave with a business rather than a set of notes.
